Get started
What you need, how to get the Windows installer, what Windows may warn you about, where your data is stored, and how to update or remove Maxtkn.
Last updated
| Requirement | Needed for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit | The app | The only platform built and tested today. |
| Internet connection | Models | Model requests go to your provider. Offline use works with a local model server. |
| A model | Real work | An API key, a local model server, or your Claude or ChatGPT plan through its own tool. See Connect a model. |
| Git (optional) | Versions, isolated copies, many terminal sessions | Maxtkn tells you in plain words when a feature needs it and it is missing. |
| Node.js 20 or newer (optional) | The command line, and projects that use Node | Not needed for the desktop app itself. |
| A coding tool (optional) | Terminal sessions | Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode or Gemini CLI, installed and signed in on your computer. See Many terminal sessions. |
The installer also needs Microsoft’s WebView2 runtime, which is already part of current Windows 10 and 11. If your computer does not have it, the installer downloads it, so the first install can need a connection.
The checksum on the card lets you confirm the file is exactly the one that was published. In PowerShell, in the folder you downloaded to:
Get-FileHash .\<the installer file name> -Algorithm SHA256The value printed must match the card, letter for letter. If it does not, delete the file and download it again.
| What | Where |
|---|---|
| Projects | The folders you choose. If you let Maxtkn make one, it is in Documents\Maxtkn. |
| Settings and history | A local database in the app’s data folder under your user profile (%APPDATA%\com.maxtkn.app). |
| API keys | The Windows Credential Manager. |
| Run logs from the command line | .maxtkn\runs inside the project that was run. |
The app does not send us usage data. What this website stores is on the Privacy page, and the rules for using Maxtkn are on the Terms page.
The app has an updater built in, but the update feed is not switched on for early-access builds. The Settings page says so instead of pretending. To update, download the newer installer from this website and run it over the old one. Your projects live in your own folders and your settings and history live outside the install folder, so they are kept.
The changelog lists what changed in each version.
The maxtkn command line is separate from the desktop installer and is not published as a package yet. See The maxtkn command line for what it needs and how it is built today.
Build settings for Linux and macOS exist and the test suite has been run on Linux, but no macOS or Linux build has been run and driven as an app. They are not offered for download. Choose your platform on the early access list to hear when that changes.
Something missing or wrong? Maxtkn is early-access software and these pages change with it. The changelog lists what changed in each build.
