Maxtkn vs OpenAI Codex

Codex is OpenAI’s coding agent, part of ChatGPT. Maxtkn is a desktop workspace for agent teams that can use your Codex plan or run Codex itself.

The short version

  • Codex is OpenAI’s coding agent. It comes in several forms, including a command-line tool, editor integrations and a desktop app, and it is tied to ChatGPT plans.
  • Maxtkn is a desktop workspace with its own team of agents, preview, review and undo. It works with many model providers, not one.
  • They also work together. Maxtkn can use your Codex plan as a model source, and can start Codex in its terminal sessions, each in its own copy of your project. Codex is one of the less-tested tools there, and the app says so when you choose it.

Where Codex is stronger

  • It is OpenAI’s own agent. It is made by the company that makes the models, so new OpenAI abilities tend to show up there early.
  • Cloud tasks. Codex can run work on OpenAI’s machines, so tasks continue with your computer off. Maxtkn runs only on your computer and has no cloud agents.
  • A mature sandbox. Codex has an operating-system-level sandbox kept separate from its approval settings. Maxtkn guards the project folder and checks commands first, with an optional container or WSL sandbox, but by default it is a guard rather than a virtual machine.
  • More ways in. Codex is available in several places a developer already works. Maxtkn is a single desktop app, built and tested on Windows only, and still a beta.

Where Maxtkn is different

  • Not tied to one provider. Use Claude, an OpenAI-compatible service, OpenRouter, Gemini, Mistral, Groq, Azure, a local model, or your Codex or Claude Code plan, and switch per request.
  • A team you choose. Specialists plan, build, test and review in parallel, and bigger work starts with a design you approve first.
  • Plain-language supervision. A walkthrough written from the check results, an explain-this button for any change or command, and a live preview, so you do not have to read a diff to judge the work.
  • Cost before you send. The message box shows the likely cost and time, and day and month budgets stop a run at the limit.
  • One payment. The app has no subscription.

Which should you pick?

  • Pick Codex if you live in the OpenAI and ChatGPT world, want cloud tasks, or need a mature sandbox on macOS or Linux.
  • Pick Maxtkn if you want a visual workspace with agent teams and checks, you are on Windows, or you want to keep your choice of model.
  • Use both. Connect your Codex plan in Maxtkn, or run Codex in several terminal sessions at once.
Can I use my ChatGPT plan in Maxtkn?

Yes, for Codex. Maxtkn starts the tool you already use and never reads its login, and usage counts against your plan. See Connect a model.

Is Maxtkn tied to OpenAI?

No. It works with Claude, any OpenAI-compatible service, local models and more. OpenAI is one option among them.

Which is safer?

They take different approaches, and neither is a substitute for your own judgement. Maxtkn limits agents to the project folder, rejects paths that escape it and asks before risky commands. Codex uses an operating-system sandbox. Read both vendors’ safety pages, and use Ask first for work you are unsure about. See Access and safety.
