The short version
- Claude Code is a coding agent made by Anthropic. You mostly use it from a terminal, and it is built for people who are comfortable there.
- Maxtkn is a desktop workspace around agents. It has its own team of agents, a preview, review and undo, and it does not assume you read code.
- This is the least either-or comparison on this site. Maxtkn can use your Claude Code plan as a model source, and it can start Claude Code in up to twenty terminal sessions, each in its own copy of your project. Claude Code is the best-tested tool there.
At a glance
| Maxtkn | Claude Code | |
|---|---|---|
| Made for | People who describe what they want and review results. No code reading required | Developers who are comfortable working in a terminal |
| Main surface | A desktop app: chat, plan, files, editor, terminal and live preview side by side | A terminal first, with editor integrations |
| Models | Your own key for Claude or any OpenAI-compatible service, local servers such as Ollama, or your Claude Code or Codex plan | Claude models, through a Claude plan or an API account |
| Agent teams | Solo, Product team or Full squad, with named roles you pick per request | One agent that can hand work to helper agents |
| Approvals | Ask first, Auto-edit or Full access, plus permission profiles per project. Secrets and risky commands always ask | Its own permission settings |
| Undo and review | Every change has an owner. Keep or reject single hunks, or rewind the whole project | Edits you review in the terminal or your editor |
| Checking the work | Runs your tests and build, opens your app in a browser, saves plain-sentence acceptance checks, and a reviewer reads the diff | Runs the commands you ask for. Checks are yours to set up |
| While you are away | Goals and scheduled tasks with time and money limits. Scheduled tasks run while Maxtkn is open | Can be run from scripts and CI jobs |
| Where it runs | Your Windows PC. macOS and Linux are not available yet | Your own computer, on the systems Anthropic supports |
| What it costs | One payment, no subscription. Planned $79 or $199, with a $29 launch offer. Not on sale yet. Model usage is billed by your provider, or counts against your Claude plan | Included with Claude plans, or billed per use through an API account. See Anthropic’s pricing |
Where Claude Code is stronger
- Depth for developers. Claude Code is made by the people who make the Claude models, and developers use it daily. Maxtkn’s own agents are newer, and Claude Code is the tool its Terminals view tests most.
- Terminal and script native. If your work already lives in a shell, a script or a CI job, Claude Code fits there without a desktop app in the way.
- More systems. It is not limited to one operating system. Maxtkn is built and tested on Windows only, and is a beta whose installer is not code-signed yet.
- Close to the models. It is made by the company that makes Claude, so new Claude abilities tend to show up there early. Maxtkn reaches Claude through its API or by starting Claude Code itself.
Where Maxtkn is different
- A workspace, not just a prompt. Plan, files, a code editor, a real terminal and a live preview sit beside the chat. You can draw on the preview to show what to change.
- A team you choose. Specialists plan, build, test and review in parallel, and bigger work starts with a design you approve first.
- Many sessions in one place. The Terminals view starts one to twenty Claude Code sessions, each on its own git branch in its own copy of your project, and shows which ones are working, waiting for you or stopped.
- Model freedom. The same workspace works with your own key, a local model, or your Claude Code or Codex plan, so you are not tied to one provider.
- Checks and a record. Tests, browser checks, a reviewer, and a saved thread you can verify was not changed.
Which should you pick?
- Pick Claude Code if you are a developer who likes the terminal and wants one capable agent with nothing in between.
- Pick Maxtkn if you prefer a visual workspace, want a team of agents with checks and undo, or you are not a programmer.
- Use both. Run Claude Code inside Maxtkn to get many parallel sessions on their own branches, and keep using it in your own terminal when you want to.
Do I need a Claude plan to use Maxtkn?
No. Maxtkn works with your own API key, any OpenAI-compatible service or a local model. If you do have a Claude Code plan, Maxtkn can use it as a model source. Maxtkn starts the tool you already use and never reads its login. See Connect a model.
Does Maxtkn replace Claude Code?
It does not have to. Maxtkn has its own agents, but it can also run Claude Code. Use whichever suits the task.
Will using Claude Code inside Maxtkn cost extra?
Maxtkn adds no model charge. Claude Code usage counts against your Claude plan or your API account, exactly as it does in your own terminal.
